While many already consider it to be the best Zelda game, Breath of the Wild has also now sold enough copies in the U.S. to make it the best-selling entry as well.
This news comes by way of The NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella who shared the information recently over on Twitter. Piscatella said that Breath of the Wild surpassed that of Twilight Princess “some time ago” to become the best-selling game in the series in the United States. This ranking only takes into account each entry’s original release, so re-releases and remasters over the years (Ocarina of Time 3D, for instance) doesn’t count toward the same game in the series.
That said, Breath of the Wild does have the luxury of originally releasing on both Switch and Wii U, a factor which surely helped it come in atop the rest of the entries on this list. Twilight Princess also came to two platforms at launch, too, with the GameCube and Wii, likely making it a reason why it ended up being the previous best-seller in the series.

Also, shoutout to Link’s Crossbow Training for cracking the top-5 on this list. The Wii was such a huge success back in the day that this mediocre spin-off game was able to slot in above other more notable entries in the series like Wind Waker. That’s a pretty crazy feat.
We’ll have to wait and see in the coming years if the currently in-development sequel to Breath of the Wild will be able to outdo the success of its predecessor. As of now, that sequel still doesn’t have a release window, but hopefully, we’ll learn more sooner rather than later.
